Our mission
Ubumwe seeks to unify and empower Burundian refugees as they pursue higher education and careers through mentorship and tangible support.
Our vision
We long to see Burundian refugees thrive in academic spaces and professional settings. Ubumwe addresses the challenges Burundian refugees face regarding higher education and job networks. This is why we are committed to learning and supporting our peers when they seek our assistance and guidance.

Our Story
Ubumwe was founded on October 24, 2017, in Fredericksburg, Virginia, by Alexander Abel and Nehemia Abel. As Burundian refugees navigating life in a new country, they faced significant challenges, particularly with college enrollment. Limited English proficiency, unfamiliarity with American educational systems, and financial constraints made the process daunting. However, through perseverance, they successfully enrolled in college and recognized a broader need within their community. They saw an opportunity to support other refugees by simplifying the enrollment process and providing guidance to help them thrive in higher education.
Believing in the transformative power of education, the founders established Ubumwe—meaning “unity” in Kirundi—to empower Burundian refugees through mentorship, tutoring, and professional development programs. Ubumwe is committed to helping refugees access higher education, build stable careers, and uplift their families and communities.
Beyond academics, Ubumwe fosters cultural awareness and community engagement. Members work to preserve and share Burundian heritage, challenge stereotypes, and create a supportive space for the Burundian diaspora. Through unity and education, Ubumwe strives to create lasting opportunities for refugees to succeed and contribute meaningfully to society.
